Background

The paper began in 1909 as the Ahoskie Patriot. In 1915 J. Roy Parker bought a half interest, and the Parker family ran the company until the late 1980s. By 1931 it had added several nearby local papers, including the Jackson News, the Aulander Advance and the Gates County Index. In 1962 the Daily Roanoke-Chowan Times of Murfreesboro merged with the Herald to form a tri-weekly. By 1977 all the publications ran under the name Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald. The Parker family sold its interest in the early 1980s, and the paper then passed through a series of owners. The Northampton News merged into it in 1996. Boone Newspapers bought it in 2000 and still owns it. I found no notable editorial controversies. Like most small-town papers, it mostly covers local government, schools, courts, sports and community events, so its perspective is local and general-interest rather than ideological. Because it has little national political commentary, I could not assess its stance toward the administration from the sources I consulted.
