Background

The paper traces its roots to 1914, when it was established as the Ahoskie Patriot in the small northeastern North Carolina town of Ahoskie. In 1915, J. Roy Parker bought a half interest, and the publication remained a Parker family business for roughly seven decades. By 1931 the company had absorbed four neighboring weeklies — the Windsor Ledger, the Jackson News, the Aulander Advance, and the Gates County Index — expanding its footprint across the rural Roanoke-Chowan region. In 1962, the Daily Roanoke-Chowan Times merged with The Herald to create a tri-weekly, and by 1977 the unified paper took its current name, the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald. The Parker family sold in the early 1980s, and the paper passed through multiple owners during the following decade. In 1996, the Northampton News was folded into it, and in 2000 the paper was acquired by Boone Newspapers, Inc. (now Boone Newsmedia, Inc.), a Tuscaloosa-based chain that today owns or manages more than 90 community newspapers across roughly a dozen states. The paper's coverage area is notably majority-minority — Hertford, Northampton, and Bertie counties have large Black populations — and its reporting reflects the concerns of a predominantly rural, economically modest readership. AllSides has not assigned the paper a media-bias rating, and no systematic evidence of a pronounced national political editorial stance has been documented.
