Background

The Royal Gazette was first published in January 1828 under the full title 'The Royal Gazette, Bermuda Commercial and General Advertiser and Recorder.' Its founder, Donald MacPhee Lee, was a Canadian immigrant from Prince Edward Island who served as editor until his death in 1883; the paper was then run by his son and later his daughter. The outlet acquired its 'Royal' designation by serving as the official King's Printer in Bermuda and publishing government notices — a role that gave it an early establishment character. From 1900 it published twice weekly before eventually becoming a daily. Today it is Bermuda's sole daily newspaper, published every day except Sundays and public holidays, with a print readership of more than 20,000 and over 25,000 daily website users. Its parent company, Bermuda Press (Holdings) Ltd., is publicly traded on the Bermuda Stock Exchange and also operates commercial printing, office supply, and stationery businesses. The paper is a member of the Media Council of Bermuda and formally declares no party affiliation, though its opinion section has consistently published columns critical of Trump-era U.S. trade and foreign policy for the economic pressure those policies place on Bermuda's small, U.S.-dependent economy.
