S&P Global Market Intelligence
U.S. financial industry, data-driven neutral
Background
S&P Global Market Intelligence was formally branded in February 2016, combining two earlier units: S&P Capital IQ and SNL Financial. SNL Financial was founded in Charlottesville, Virginia, by Reid Nagle in 1987, originally as a niche data provider for bank and thrift investors. New Mountain Capital acquired a majority stake in SNL in 2011, then McGraw Hill Financial (the predecessor of S&P Global) bought SNL for $2.2 billion in July 2015. McGraw Hill Financial itself rebranded as S&P Global in 2016. The parent company's roots trace to 1888, when James H. McGraw began acquiring trade publications, and S&P Global acquired Standard & Poor's — the ratings agency — in 1966. In February 2022, S&P Global completed a $44 billion merger with IHS Markit, folding IHS Markit's Financial Services division into Market Intelligence and substantially expanding its data coverage. In October 2025, S&P Global announced the acquisition of With Intelligence, a private markets data firm, for $1.8 billion. As a B2B intelligence service rather than a traditional news outlet, S&P Global Market Intelligence does not carry a discernible partisan editorial stance; its published analysis is grounded in proprietary datasets and tends to reflect mainstream economic and financial-industry consensus.
