Background

Saint-Gobain was founded in France in 1665 and is one of the world's oldest industrial companies. Its North American presence grew mainly through CertainTeed, which was founded in 1904 as the General Roofing Manufacturing Company in East St. Louis, Illinois. Saint-Gobain and CertainTeed formed an insulation joint venture in 1967. Saint-Gobain took a controlling 57 percent stake in 1976 and made CertainTeed a wholly owned subsidiary in 1988. The company has kept growing through acquisitions, including Building Products of Canada and, in October 2025, RISE Building Products, a maker of composite siding and trim. Its website and press releases present company news, product launches and corporate messaging, so they should be read as promotional material from an interested party, not independent reporting. I found no record of a partisan editorial line, and its public statements on policy are generally limited to business matters such as trade, energy efficiency and construction demand.
