Saxo Bank
European financial / market-oriented (Danish-headquartered, Swiss-owned)
Background
Saxo Bank was founded in August 1992 in Copenhagen, Denmark, as Midas Fondsmæglerselskab by Kim Fournais and Lars Seier Christensen. In the mid-1990s, the founders pivoted to internet-based trading and built a proprietary online platform that became the company's core product. After obtaining a banking license, the firm rebranded as Saxo Bank in 2001 and expanded globally into one of Europe's largest online brokerages. From 2017 onward, Chinese automaker Geely's financial arm acquired a majority stake (eventually ~52%), making it the first major European bank to come under Chinese corporate ownership and drawing regulatory scrutiny. Finnish insurer Sampo also held roughly 20% during this period. In 2025, Swiss private banking group J. Safra Sarasin agreed to buy the Geely and other shareholders' positions, completing a ~71% acquisition in March 2026; it then agreed to purchase founder Fournais's remaining ~29% stake in mid-2026, achieving full ownership. Saxo Bank's published output — market outlooks, trade ideas, and the annual 'Outrageous Predictions' (deliberately provocative low-probability scenarios) — is aimed at sophisticated investors worldwide and regularly receives coverage from Bloomberg, Reuters, and financial press. Its editorial voice is that of a global trading platform: analytically focused, commercially motivated, and oriented toward European and international investors rather than any domestic political constituency.
