Background

Scientific American was founded in 1845 and is one of the oldest continuously published magazines in the U.S. Over time it passed through several owners. Germany's Holtzbrinck group acquired it in 1986 and later folded it into Nature Publishing Group, which became part of Springer Nature. It long avoided presidential endorsements. It endorsed Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024, which it said were only its first two endorsements in its history. Its editorial and opinion pages take a pro-evidence, pro-science-funding stance on topics such as climate change, vaccines and reproductive health. Critics on the right say this reflects a progressive political tilt, and supporters say it follows scientific consensus. In 2026 Springer Nature sold the magazine to LabX Media Group. Union members represented by the Writers Guild of America East accused Springer Nature of selling out of fear of repercussions from the Trump administration. Springer Nature had separately lost about $20 million in U.S. government grant funding. Search results also report that LabX cut about 15 staff after the purchase. The union says this was about a third of its bargaining unit and 60% of its organizing committee. These claims come from union statements and secondary reports. I could not independently verify them or LabX's response, and the long-term editorial effects are still unclear.
