Scotsman Guide

U.S. mortgage-industry trade press (pro-industry, nonpartisan in tone)

Owned byPrivately held by Scotsman Guide Inc., a family-run company based in Bothell, Washington. CEO Kevin Britton-Simmons is the son of founder Geary Britton-Simmons.
FundingMainly advertising and sponsorships from mortgage lenders, brokers and related vendors. It also earns revenue from events, lead and directory products, and some subscriptions. This is based on its trade-publication model. I could not find audited financials.
On the administrationmostly neutral

Background

Geary Britton-Simmons acquired Scotsman Publishing Inc. in 1985. That company published the Western Washington Bulletin, a weekly of directory listings and mortgage rates. In December 1994 it launched Scotsman Guide to serve mortgage professionals in the Pacific Northwest. The publication later expanded nationally. It added a second title by acquiring Commercial Lender Magazine in 2001, which became the Commercial Edition. The company is still run by the founder's family, with Kevin Britton-Simmons as CEO and Todd Britton-Simmons leading marketing. It publishes monthly residential and commercial print and digital editions, plus news, rankings, events and education products. Its perspective is that of the lending industry. It tends to cover regulation, rates and market trends from the point of view of originators and lenders rather than consumers, and it relies on the industry for advertising. I found no notable controversies or ownership changes in the sources I consulted. Its policy coverage is mostly straightforward reporting of agency and political actions. I did not check its recent coverage in detail.
