Background

SCOTUSblog was founded in 2002 by Supreme Court litigator Tom Goldstein and his wife Amy Howe, initially as a marketing tool for their law firm, Goldstein & Howe. It grew into an authoritative source on the Court after hiring veteran reporter Lyle Denniston, and won a Peabody Award in 2013 for its live-blogging of major rulings. Bloomberg Law sponsored the site exclusively from 2011 to 2014, funding its expansion into a small newsroom; it later operated under a nonprofit structure with additional foundation and donor support. In January 2025, Goldstein was indicted on 22 federal counts of tax evasion, false tax filings, failure to pay taxes, and mortgage fraud tied to undisclosed high-stakes poker winnings; he was convicted on 12 of 16 counts in February 2026, a scandal that became entangled with the outlet's reputation even though Goldstein had stepped back from day-to-day management. In April 2025, the nonprofit that controlled SCOTUSblog sold it to The Dispatch, a center-right outlet founded by Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes; The Dispatch pledged to keep the site free and to preserve its "unbiased" case-reporting approach.
