Background

Screen International traces its roots to British film trade papers dating to the late 19th century, including the Optical Magic Lantern and Cinematograph Journal (founded 1889). Its modern form began in 1975 when publisher Peter King relaunched CinemaTV Today — itself a 1971 merger of Kinematograph Weekly and Today's Cinema — as Screen International. King sold the title to the International Thomson Organization in 1989, and it subsequently passed to EMAP in the 1990s. The screendaily.com website launched in 2001 as the publication's digital companion, and over time 'Screen Daily' became the commonly used online brand. Ownership moved to Media Business Insight (MBI), a British B2B media company, which also published Broadcast magazine and several production-industry directories. In June 2022, GlobalData Plc — a London Stock Exchange-listed data and analytics firm — acquired MBI for approximately £19 million, folding Screen International into its media and entertainment intelligence portfolio. Throughout these ownership changes, Screen Daily has remained editorially focused on the international film business: festival coverage (Cannes, Venice, Berlin), box office analysis, talent deals, and production finance — without a discernible political orientation.
