Background
Semafor was launched on October 18, 2022, by Ben Smith — formerly editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News and a media columnist at The New York Times — and Justin B. Smith, former CEO of Bloomberg Media Group. The outlet raised $25 million in its initial funding round, which included a $10 million investment from crypto exchange founder Sam Bankman-Fried; after FTX collapsed and Bankman-Fried was arrested for fraud in late 2022, Semafor replaced that capital with a new $19 million round, bringing early total funding to about $34 million. The outlet built its reputation partly on a proprietary 'Semaform' article format that separates straight news from reporter analysis and includes counterarguments — an approach designed to make opinion and fact more transparent to readers. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Least Biased' because of that structural transparency, while AllSides, after a multipartisan editorial review in late 2024, rated it 'Lean Left' (-1.5 on its scale), a slight leftward shift from an earlier rating. In January 2026, Semafor announced its first profitable year (roughly $2 million in profit on about $40 million in 2025 revenue) and closed a $30 million Series A at a $330 million valuation, with backing from finance luminaries including Henry Kravis and David Rubenstein alongside new international investors. The outlet has expanded aggressively into live journalism, with more than 100 conferences planned for 2026, and is developing new newsletters focused on China, the Gulf, and business. No major editorial misconduct controversies have arisen, though the early Bankman-Fried funding tie drew scrutiny given his subsequent criminal conviction.
