Background

Social Europe was launched in 2005 as 'Social Europe Journal' in London, founded by Henning Meyer, Detlev Albers and Stephen Haseler to promote social-democratic debate on EU integration and welfare-state policy. It relocated its publishing base from London to Berlin in 2018, operating since as Social Europe Publishing & Consulting GmbH. The outlet has no single commercial owner; it relies on voluntary memberships and donations from individuals and institutions sympathetic to center-left European policy, and has had informal ties to social-democratic think tanks and foundations in Germany and the EU. Meyer remains editor-in-chief and the outlet positions itself as a think tank and opinion forum rather than a traditional news organization, publishing contributions from academics, trade unionists, and EU officials. It has no major public controversies regarding factual accuracy, but its roster of contributors and framing consistently reflect a social-democratic, pro-EU-integration perspective.
