The SCMP's opinion section is part of a Hong Kong English-language paper owned by Alibaba since 2016. Its commentary tends to avoid direct criticism of Beijing and often reflects Chinese and Asian-region viewpoints, while carrying a mix of staff editorials, columns and syndicated pieces. Its recent commentary on the Trump administration is mostly critical, especially of tariffs, which it describes as unpredictable, legally shaky and economically messy.
