Background

SouthFront launched in the summer of 2015, presenting itself as a nonprofit, nonpartisan analysis site focused on military operations, armed conflicts, and geopolitics. It quickly developed a following among military enthusiasts and veterans by publishing detailed battlefield maps and weapons analyses, primarily favorable to Russian and Syrian government forces. Despite its claims of independence, U.S. intelligence agencies concluded it operated under FSB direction. In April 2021, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned SouthFront under Executive Orders 13848 and 13694 — citing its role in foreign interference in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, including promotion of voter-fraud claims — and under EO 13382 for acting on the FSB's behalf. It was part of a broader network alongside NewsFront, InfoRos (a GRU front), and the Strategic Culture Foundation. Major platforms removed it around the same time: Facebook deleted its roughly 100,000-follower page in April 2020, and YouTube terminated its main channel — which had accumulated over 60 million views — in May 2020, both citing coordinated inauthentic behavior. SouthFront has characterized these removals as political censorship. The site continues to operate on its own domain, maintaining an anonymous editorial structure with no bylines or named staff.
