Sova News
Russian-language independent, pro-democracy/Western-oriented (Georgia/Caucasus focus)
Background
SOVA.News was launched in Tbilisi in 2016 by a group of professional journalists aiming to give Russian-speaking readers reliable, non-state-controlled information about Georgia and the wider Caucasus region. It emerged partly to serve the growing community of Russian émigrés and exiles who relocated to Georgia, especially after 2022, offering coverage of Georgia-Russia relations, regional politics, and the experiences of Russians abroad. The outlet operates a commercial arm, SOVA Media Services, which sells advertising and production services to reach Russian-, Georgian-, Ukrainian-, Belarusian-, and Armenian-language audiences. It describes itself as independent and focused on democratic values, positioning its coverage in contrast to Kremlin state media. In 2024 the outlet said it lost control of its original domain and had its content copied, and it publicly alleged the takeover was linked to Russian propaganda efforts targeting independent Russian-language media — a claim reported by Civil.ge but not independently verified by outside investigators. It has since operated from sovanews.tv. Because its focus is regional (Georgia, Russia, the Caucasus) rather than U.S. politics, it does not maintain a consistent editorial line on the Trump administration.
