Background

SpaceNews was first published on September 18, 1989, originally owned by the Army Times Publishing Company. It distinguished itself early by emphasizing economic, policy, and contractual space news over pure science coverage. When Gannett acquired Army Times Publishing in 1997, SpaceNews came along; it was then sold to Space.com (later Imaginova) in 2000. In July 2012, Pocket Ventures LLC, a media acquisition group, purchased SpaceNews from Imaginova and steered its digital expansion. In October 2023, SpaceNews merged with Multiverse Media Inc. to form a combined company under the Multiverse Media name, with SpaceNews shareholders retaining control. The publication has grown to reach more than 500,000 readers annually and is regarded as a primary trade journal for the space industry.
