Background

The channel launched on March 22, 2002, as 'News 14 Carolina,' a 24-hour local news service created by Time Warner Cable; the Charlotte-specific regional feed debuted two months later, on June 14, 2002. It was modeled in part on NY1, Time Warner Cable's flagship local news channel in New York City. The channel covered North Carolina with multiple regional feeds, using digital cameras and file-based workflows from the start, which was innovative for local TV news at the time. In May 2016, Charter Communications acquired Time Warner Cable in a major merger that also included Bright House Networks; all TWC-branded services were migrated to the Spectrum brand. The channel was rebranded 'Spectrum News North Carolina' in March 2017 and later reorganized under the 'Spectrum News 1' banner used across Charter's network of more than 35 local news channels nationwide. Because Spectrum News channels are distributed through Charter's cable subscription bundle rather than competing for open-market ratings, the outlet operates without the commercial pressure that drives sensationalism at many local TV stations.
