Sputnik was launched on November 10, 2014, by Rossiya Segodnya, a Russian state media holding company formed by a presidential decree from Vladimir Putin on December 9, 2013, which merged and replaced the Soviet-era RIA Novosti and Voice of Russia outlets. Margarita Simonyan, also the chief editor of RT, serves as Sputnik's editor-in-chief and has publicly described RT as an 'information weapon' for the Russian state. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sputnik lost its broadcast license in the United Kingdom, was banned across the European Union, and shut down U.S. operations; the Kremlin responded by pivoting its international media strategy toward what it calls the 'global majority'—countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Sputnik India launched in late 2022 specifically to reach Indian audiences, with an editorial focus on India-Russia bilateral relations, BRICS cooperation, defense ties, and India's strategic autonomy from Western pressure.
