Background

STAT launched on November 4, 2015, as a standalone health and life-sciences news brand under Boston Globe Media. John Henry, who had purchased The Boston Globe in 2013, created it to cover the booming biotech and pharmaceutical scene centered in Boston. The outlet was built from the start as a digital subscription product aimed partly at industry professionals — pharma companies, hospitals, and universities — rather than a general audience. Rick Berke, a veteran of nearly three decades at The New York Times, served as founding executive editor. STAT grew from roughly two dozen employees at launch to about 100 by its tenth anniversary in 2025, expanding coverage to scientific hubs across the U.S. and into the U.K. Its revenue model blends individual and institutional subscriptions, advertising and sponsorships, events, and a branded content studio; subscriptions grew roughly 30 percent annually in the years leading up to 2025. Media analysts and watchdog groups, including Media Bias/Fact Check, rate STAT as left-center in editorial orientation, with high marks for factual accuracy and pro-science framing. Since January 2025, STAT has provided extensive and largely critical coverage of the Trump administration's health agenda, including proposed cuts of more than 25 percent to HHS discretionary spending, the termination of hundreds of NIH grants, and structural changes to the FDA and CDC.
