State Court Report
U.S. center-left (progressive-leaning legal policy think tank)
Background
State Court Report was launched in September 2023 by the Brennan Center for Justice as a site devoted to state constitutions and state courts. Alicia Bannon, director of the Brennan Center's Judiciary Program, is editor in chief, and Douglas Keith, senior counsel in the program, is a founding editor. The site publishes news, analysis and commentary from outside legal experts, and keeps a database of about 550 significant state supreme court decisions and briefs since 2021, along with materials from major pending cases. It has also had a content partnership with Slate. The site calls itself nonpartisan, but it is an output of an advocacy-oriented think tank that generally supports voting rights, judicial independence and expansive readings of state constitutional protections. It also takes critical positions on court-curbing efforts and on money in judicial elections. Its recent coverage includes state attorneys general suing over Trump administration policies such as the birthright citizenship order. Its framing in that coverage is generally sympathetic to the challengers. The Brennan Center's own work includes critical research on the administration's attempts to take over elections. No major editorial scandals were found, and the site's research content is detailed and sourced. Its perspective is that of a center-left legal reform organization.
