Stocktwits
U.S. financial/investor community platform; market-oriented, no explicit political alignment
Background
Stocktwits was founded in 2008–2009 by Canadian entrepreneur Howard Lindzon and developer Soren Macbeth, originally as an overlay on Twitter that used Twitter's API to organize financial discussions by stock ticker. The platform originated the 'cashtag'—prefixing a stock symbol with a dollar sign (e.g., $AAPL)—a convention Twitter adopted on its own platform in 2012. Time magazine named Stocktwits one of the 50 Best Websites in 2010, and it grew into a standalone investor community. The 2021 meme-stock frenzy drove a significant user surge, and in December 2021 the company raised a $30 million Series B at a $210 million valuation, with Alameda Research Ventures—the venture arm of Sam Bankman-Fried's crypto firm Alameda Research—as lead investor. When FTX and Alameda collapsed in a massive fraud in November 2022, the connection drew scrutiny, though Stocktwits itself was not implicated. In 2024, co-founder Lindzon returned as CEO and the company exited its brokerage business by selling its TradeApp product to Public.com, refocusing on the core social platform and data monetization. In June 2025, Stocktwits acquired Thematic, a financial software company. Today the platform monetizes through advertising, paid creator communities, and licensing its sentiment data to institutional clients.
