Streetsblog was founded in June 2006 in New York City by journalist Aaron Naparstek as a project of OpenPlans, a nonprofit launched by Mark Gorton—the LimeWire co-founder turned transportation philanthropist who served as the site's initial primary funder. The outlet launched as a platform for New York City's 'Livable Streets Movement,' which advocates reclaiming urban space from automobiles in favor of pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders. Under Naparstek's editorship through 2010, the network expanded to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., where the D.C. edition—originally called Streetsblog Capitol Hill—eventually became Streetsblog USA, the national outlet.
