Background

Sudan Tribune started in 2003 as an online news portal on Sudan, set up by Sudanese journalist William Ezekiel Deng and based in Paris. It was created partly because independent reporting from inside Sudan was restricted under the government of Omar al-Bashir. It expanded to cover South Sudan and neighboring countries, with news, analysis and commentary, and has published in English and Arabic.
