Background

The paper was launched on 31 January 2010 in New Delhi by journalist-politician M.J. Akbar and quickly built a reputation for investigative and foreign-policy reporting alongside opinion pages featuring a wide range of Indian political commentators. It print circulation covers New Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh, alongside its sundayguardianlive.com website. Ownership passed to iTV Network, a media conglomerate built by businessman Kartikeya Sharma, who also owns the Hindi/English news channels India News and NewsX and, since 2022, holds a BJP-nominated seat in the Rajya Sabha, giving the outlet a direct link to India's ruling party establishment. The paper is edited by Joyeeta Basu. Its coverage generally reflects a nationalist, pro-India-sovereignty editorial line, and on U.S. affairs it has run both critical pieces on Trump-era tariff pressure over India's Russian oil imports and more favorable analyses of U.S.-India strategic alignment, reflecting Indian national-interest framing rather than a fixed pro- or anti-Trump position.
