Background

Paul L. Caron, then a law professor at the University of Cincinnati, launched TaxProf Blog in April 2004 on the TypePad blogging platform. It quickly became one of the most widely read law professor blogs in the country, described by Reuters as 'an influential early entrant in the constellation of law professor blogs that flourished in the mid-2000s through the 2010s.' The blog aggregated and commented on tax law news, scholarship, and legal education developments, and its posts were regularly cited by outlets including USA Today and The Washington Post. Caron moved to Pepperdine University's law school in 2013 and was named its dean in 2017, continuing to run the blog throughout. Over its original run, TaxProf Blog published more than 55,000 posts and drew roughly 800,000 visitors annually. When the TypePad platform announced it would shut down, Caron announced in September 2025 that he would close the blog on September 30, 2025. The Association of American Law Schools stepped in and, in October 2025, relaunched it as 'TaxProf Blog 2.0' on the AALS website, with Caron continuing as editor alongside a team of tax law and legal education editors. The blog has no identifiable partisan orientation; it covers developments across the ideological spectrum of tax policy and tends to present academic and practitioner viewpoints rather than editorial advocacy.
