Background

Technician published its first edition in 1920, replacing The Red and White, an athletics-department publication that had been suspended during World War I. It was established as the first editorially independent student newspaper at NC State, meaning university administrators do not review content before publication. The paper expanded its publication schedule over the decades, becoming a daily newspaper in fall 1988 before scaling back to weekly print editions in the 2010s. Since 2018 it has published in print each Thursday during the academic year while maintaining continuous online coverage. The paper is governed by NC State's Student Media Board of Directors, which allocates student fee funding and sets policy but does not direct editorial content. Technician's opinion section has historically engaged with campus politics, issuing student-government election endorsements and editorial board positions on university policy. In the 2025–2026 academic year, the editorial board covered the Trump administration's DEI executive orders and federal funding freezes extensively, consistently characterizing those actions as harmful to NC State—noting student organizations losing official status, faculty dismissals, and threats to the university's federal research funding as concrete campus consequences.
