Background
Telemundo's roots go back to 1954, when Puerto Rican media entrepreneur Ángel Ramos founded WKAQ-TV in San Juan as part of a broader Spanish-language media operation targeting the island's growing audiences. The modern U.S. network was assembled in 1987 when Reliance Capital Group combined several Spanish-language television stations into a national network. After financial struggles and a 1993 bankruptcy reorganization, the network was acquired by Sony and Liberty Media in 1998, which invested in original domestic programming to compete with Univision. NBC paid $2.7 billion for Telemundo in 2002, bringing it into a major U.S. broadcast group and accelerating its production of original Spanish-language content, including telenovelas made in the United States rather than imported from Latin America. Comcast's 2011 acquisition of NBCUniversal folded Telemundo into one of the world's largest media conglomerates. The network has expanded its digital and streaming presence significantly, and its 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 FIFA World Cup rights positions it as a major Spanish-language sports broadcaster. AllSides' 2025 independent review rated Telemundo 'Lean Left,' citing its tendency to frame immigration stories favorably toward immigrants and its critical posture toward conservative immigration enforcement. The network generated controversy in early 2025 when it aired paid DHS advertisements promoting the Trump administration's deportation campaign—ads critics said conflicted with its news coverage framing—while simultaneously launching a special series, 'Mesa De Análisis, Inmigración Y Tus Derechos,' to inform its audience of their legal rights under the new enforcement environment.
