Background

Frankie Randolph and Ronnie Dugger founded the Observer in Austin in 1954. Its aim was to cover topics that mainstream Texas outlets underreported, and it grew out of liberal Democratic politics in the state. Dugger was founding editor until 1961, and later editors and contributors included well-known Texas writers. The magazine is published by the nonprofit Texas Democracy Foundation and has long been known for long-form reporting on state government, criminal justice, immigration, labor and the environment. It has an open progressive point of view, though it also does original reporting and has won journalism awards. In March 2023 it announced it was ceasing publication after financial trouble. Two days later it said it would continue after a staff-led crowdfunding campaign. Search results from mid-2026 indicate it has about 27 employees and an interim editor-in-chief, Gus Bova, which suggests it has recovered.
