Background

The Daily Signal was launched in June 2014 by the Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C., as a digital-only news and commentary website focused on politics, policy, and culture. The Heritage Foundation built it partly to address what it characterized as insufficient original reporting on public-policy issues from a conservative standpoint. For its first decade of operation, The Daily Signal was funded entirely by the Heritage Foundation. In June 2024, it separated from the Foundation to become an independent nonprofit — The Daily Signal Institute — with its own board of directors and executive leadership, including president and executive editor Rob Bluey. Funding now comes from reader donations and grants from conservative-leaning philanthropic organizations. Media-monitoring organizations consistently rate it as right-biased: Media Bias/Fact Check places it in the "Right" category with "Mixed" factual reporting; AllSides rates it "Right"; and Ad Fontes Media rates it "Strong Right" and "Unreliable, Problematic." The outlet explicitly describes its mission as providing conservative analysis and has positioned itself as a counter to what it characterizes as a left-leaning mainstream press. Coverage of the Trump administration's second term has been broadly supportive, with the outlet highlighting administration accomplishments, praising executive orders aligned with conservative priorities, and arguing that mainstream outlets under-report favorable Trump news.
