Background

The Globe was founded in 1844 in Toronto by Scottish immigrant George Brown, a Father of Confederation, as a Reform-aligned newspaper. A rival Conservative paper, The Mail (later the Mail and Empire), was founded in 1872. The two merged in 1936 under publisher George McCullagh, backed by mining magnate William Henry Wright. The Thomson Corporation, controlled by the family of Roy Thomson, acquired the paper in 1980. In 2015, Woodbridge — the Thomson family's principal holding company — bought out BCE's remaining 15% stake and became the sole owner. Over its history the paper has earned a reputation for high-quality national and investigative reporting; its editorial board has endorsed candidates from both the Conservative and Liberal parties, though it more often sides with pro-business, fiscally conservative positions. Media-bias trackers generally rate it centre to centre-right on the political spectrum, with strong factual credibility. Since 2025, its editorials have been sharply critical of Trump-era tariffs and U.S. economic pressure on Canada, reflecting both its national Canadian perspective and its pro-free-trade editorial tradition.
