Background

The Guardian was founded in Manchester, England, in 1821 as The Manchester Guardian by John Edward Taylor following the Peterloo Massacre, with the explicit goal of giving liberal reformers a stronger public voice. The Scott Trust was established in 1936 to guarantee the paper's financial and editorial independence in perpetuity; it was reorganized as Scott Trust Limited in 2008 and today holds an endowment fund valued at roughly £1.24 billion (2023). The paper dropped 'Manchester' from its name in 1959 and relocated to London. The Guardian expanded internationally in the 2010s, launching Guardian US in 2011 with offices in New York. It is consistently rated center-left by media bias analysts, and a 2004 features editor publicly confirmed it is 'a centre-left newspaper'; a Pew Research survey found 72% of its audience identifies as consistently or primarily liberal.
