Background

The Hollywood Reporter was founded on September 3, 1930 by William R. 'Billy' Wilkerson as Hollywood's first daily entertainment trade newspaper, covering studio deals, casting, and box-office results. Wilkerson's front-page 'Tradeviews' column made the paper a power center in the industry, though he is also a controversial figure for his role in helping trigger the Hollywood blacklist in the late 1940s. After his death in 1972 and a subsequent period under his widow Tichi Wilkerson Kassel, the paper passed through several owners before Prometheus Global Media—backed by Guggenheim Partners—acquired it along with Billboard from Nielsen Business Media in 2009. Under editor Janice Min, THR converted from a daily to a weekly large-format magazine in 2010 and significantly grew its digital presence and awards-season coverage. Guggenheim sold the properties in 2015 to executive Todd Boehly; his firm Eldridge Industries then merged with Media Rights Capital in 2018 to form Valence Media, later rebranded MRC. In 2020, Penske Media Corporation formed the PMRC joint venture with MRC and assumed day-to-day operational control of THR; after Eldridge and MRC split their assets in 2022, Eldridge acquired MRC's share of PMRC, leaving PMC and Eldridge as the primary co-owners. Rated left-center and high for factual accuracy by AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check, the outlet is widely regarded as a reliable trade source for entertainment business news and a critical observer of the intersection between politics and Hollywood.
