Background

The Jerusalem Post traces its roots to The Palestine Post, founded in 1932 by American-born journalist Gershon Agron during the British Mandate. Two years after Israeli statehood, it was renamed The Jerusalem Post in 1950. For decades it was center-left and associated with Israel's Labor establishment. In 1989, media magnate Robert Maxwell briefly acquired it; Conrad Black's Hollinger International then took ownership and shifted the paper markedly rightward through the 1990s and early 2000s, appointing a series of conservative editors including Bret Stephens (later of The Wall Street Journal). In 2004, Israeli investor Eli Azur purchased it through Mirkaei Tikshoret and the paper moved toward the center-right, where it broadly sits today. It is the most widely read English-language newspaper in Israel and targets both Israeli readers and the global Jewish diaspora. Media bias monitors rate it between center and right-center: AllSides places it at Center while Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Right-Center. A notable controversy arose in 2016 when it accepted payment from Israel's Ministry of Strategic Affairs to publish a special supplement attacking the BDS movement, blurring the line between editorial content and government-funded advocacy.
