The National (UAE)
UAE ruling-family-linked, Gulf establishment perspective
Background
The National launched on April 17, 2008, funded by Abu Dhabi Media, a government-backed entity, with the stated aim of producing Western-quality English-language journalism for the region. Its founding editor, Martin Newland — former editor of Britain's Daily Telegraph — recruited roughly 200 journalists from outlets including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Fleet Street papers. Newland departed in June 2009, and the paper cycled through several editors over the following years. In 2016, Abu Dhabi Media sold The National to International Media Investments (IMI), controlled by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, and the paper was relaunched under IMI branding in 2017. Despite its professional presentation, the outlet has been consistently documented by former staff and outside observers as self-censoring on topics sensitive to the Emirati leadership — including WikiLeaks coverage, gay rights, and domestic politics. The Financial Times characterized it as 'a mouthpiece for Abu Dhabi's worldview,' and Media Bias/Fact Check rates it as questionable for state-propaganda promotion and lack of transparency. Current editor Mina Al-Oraibi has disputed these characterizations, asserting editorial independence. In January 2025, The National cut 28 journalists as part of a broader restructuring at IMI. Its coverage of the Trump administration has been largely factual and non-adversarial, consistent with the warm UAE–U.S. relationship that accelerated through more than $100 billion in announced deals following Trump's May 2025 visit to the Gulf.
