Background

The Texas Tribune launched on election night in November 2009, co-founded by venture capitalist John Thornton, who seeded it with $1 million, journalist Evan Smith (who became its first CEO), and Ross Ramsey (executive editor). It was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to fill the gap in state-level political reporting created by shrinking commercial newsrooms, covering Texas government, politics, and policy exclusively. The outlet expanded steadily, building a diversified revenue model combining reader memberships, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, and a well-regarded annual event, the Texas Tribune Festival. Its largest institutional funders have included Arnold Ventures, which committed over $4.1 million between 2019 and 2025 to co-fund an investigative unit in partnership with ProPublica, as well as the Gates Foundation, Houston Endowment, and Knight Foundation. Evan Smith led the organization for roughly 13 years before handing the CEO role to Sonal Shah in 2023; Sarah Adler Hartman became its third CEO in December 2025. Media bias organizations — including Media Bias/Fact Check (Left-Center) and AllSides (Lean Left) — consistently rate it as tilting slightly liberal, particularly in immigration coverage, while giving it high marks for factual accuracy and sourcing.
