Background

The Washington Stand was launched on June 1, 2022 by the Family Research Council, which was itself founded in 1981 by James Dobson as a conservative Christian public policy organization. Tony Perkins, a Southern Baptist pastor and Louisiana politician who has led FRC since 2003, serves as the outlet's executive editor. The site was created as FRC's branded media arm to publish news and commentary aligned with its advocacy mission. The FRC has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center since 2010, primarily because of its positions opposing LGBTQ rights — a designation FRC strongly contests and The Washington Stand routinely criticizes. In 2012, an attacker who cited the SPLC's hate-group map shot and wounded a security guard at FRC's Washington headquarters.
