The Wire
Indian center-left
Background
The Wire launched on May 11, 2015, founded by Siddharth Varadarajan — who had previously served as editor of the national daily The Hindu — along with Sidharth Bhatia and MK Venu, with an explicit aim of creating journalism independent of corporate or political ownership. It operates under the Foundation for Independent Journalism (FIJ), a registered non-profit Indian company, and was seeded with grants from the Independent and Public Spirited Media Foundation (IPSMF), a charitable trust whose donors have included Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani. Over time it has built a reader-supported revenue base through donations and subscriptions. Editorially, The Wire has functioned as a watchdog outlet persistently critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, with extensive coverage of minority rights, institutional independence, and alleged democratic backsliding. It drew significant controversy in 2022 when it published — and then retracted — a story claiming BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya held special authority to remove content from Instagram; the outlet's own cited technical experts disowned the evidence, forcing a humiliating public retraction that damaged its credibility. The Wire and its editors have also faced police complaints and defamation suits filed by politicians and government officials. Media bias monitors generally rate it left-center in India's political landscape; its critics characterize it as oppositionally aligned against the ruling party rather than independently neutral. Despite those controversies, it remains one of India's most widely read English-language independent digital news outlets.
