Background

Time was founded on March 3, 1923, by Henry Luce and Briton Hadden as the first weekly news magazine in the United States. After Hadden's death in 1929, Luce dominated the publication and shaped it with a moderately conservative, interventionist worldview that lasted for decades. By the 1970s the magazine had shifted toward a more centrist, less openly ideological tone. Time Inc. grew into a major media conglomerate before being acquired by Meredith Corporation in early 2018 with backing from Koch Equity Development. Just weeks after closing that deal, Meredith decided the title did not fit its lifestyle-brand strategy and sold Time to Marc and Lynne Benioff for $190 million in October 2018. Under Benioff, Time has pursued a digital-first strategy, growing digital subscriptions past one million and expanding an events business that accounted for a rising share of revenue by 2025–2026. Media bias trackers place the outlet variously at center or lean left: AllSides rates it 'Lean Left,' while Ad Fontes Media calls it neutral/balanced, reflecting ongoing disagreement about where its editorial center of gravity sits.
