Background

Launched in February 2012 by David Horovitz, a former editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post and The Jerusalem Report, the site was built to be an English-language digital-first alternative to Israel's traditional print papers. Seth Klarman, a major American Jewish philanthropist and hedge-fund manager, provided early financial backing and holds the chairman role, though Horovitz has said Klarman does not direct editorial content. The outlet has expanded into Hebrew (Zman Yisrael), Arabic, French, and Persian editions and now ranks among the most-read English-language sources on Israel and the Jewish world. It maintains an editorial policy explicitly stating it will not host content that questions the legitimacy of a Jewish and democratic Israel, a stance critics say limits how far its opinion pages will go in challenging Israeli state policy, particularly on Palestinian statehood.
