To Vima
Greek center-right / pro-establishment
Background
To Vima was founded in 1922 by Dimitrios Lambrakis and became the flagship of the Lambrakis Press Group (DOL). The group also published Ta Nea. Historically it was seen as a liberal, modernizing, establishment paper, and its Sunday edition (Vima tis Kyriakis) was influential. DOL fell deep into debt in the 2010s, and in early 2017 the closure of its titles was announced for economic reasons. Later in 2017 Alter Ego Media, controlled by Marinakis, acquired DOL's assets and kept the papers going. Marinakis owns the Olympiacos football club, has a stake in Nottingham Forest and is a major shipowner. Press-freedom groups, including the International Press Institute, have cited his holdings in reports on concentration of media ownership and political ties in Greece. Media Bias/Fact Check now rates the paper right-center with mixed factual reporting. It describes Marinakis as close to the Mitsotakis family and the paper as critical of opposition figures such as Alexis Tsipras. The international English edition, tovima.com, publishes news and analysis aimed at a global audience. I found no thorough, current study of its Trump-era coverage, so any characterization of its stance rests on limited examples.
