Background

TODAY premiered on January 14, 1952, on NBC, making it one of the longest-running programs in American television history. Created by NBC executive Sylvester 'Pat' Weaver as an 'electronic newspaper,' it was the first major-network program to air in early morning hours and pioneered the news-magazine format that all modern morning shows follow. Originally hosted by Dave Garroway, the show expanded from two hours to four hours on weekdays and added weekend editions over the decades. NBC was owned by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) until 1986, when General Electric acquired it; in 2004, GE merged NBC with Vivendi Universal Entertainment to form NBCUniversal. Comcast acquired a majority stake in NBCUniversal in 2011 and completed a full buyout in 2013, making it the current corporate parent. TODAY draws its revenue almost entirely from advertising and is one of NBC's most commercially valuable properties. While the show emphasizes a friendly, accessible tone over hard political commentary, its story selection and framing have been consistently rated as left-center by independent media-bias monitors, and the Trump administration has publicly targeted NBC — including calls to revoke its FCC broadcast license and denying NBC News access to Pentagon briefings.
