Background
Townhall was founded in 1995 by The Heritage Foundation as one of the first conservative online communities. In 2005 it separated from the Heritage Foundation to operate independently, and in May 2006 Salem Communications (now Salem Media Group) acquired the site and relaunched it with expanded podcast offerings. Salem Media Group donates exclusively to Republican candidates and right-leaning PACs according to campaign finance records. Under Salem, Townhall became the anchor of a growing conservative digital portfolio called Townhall Media, which expanded to include HotAir, RedState, PJ Media, Twitchy, and Bearing Arms, collectively reaching over 15 million unique visitors monthly. The outlet publishes news reports, political cartoons, and opinion columns almost entirely from a conservative viewpoint; fact-checkers at Media Bias/Fact Check rate it 'Right' with a 'Mixed' record on factual accuracy, citing consistently one-sided framing. Townhall has been a reliable platform for pro-Republican messaging through multiple election cycles and has embraced Trump-aligned commentary since his first campaign in 2016. In January 2026, Townhall appointed Larry O'Connor as editor of Townhall.com, continuing its leadership within the Salem conservative media ecosystem.
