Background

Townhall launched on March 2, 1995, as one of the earliest conservative communities on the internet, founded as a joint project of The Heritage Foundation and National Review. It operated primarily as a Heritage Foundation project through the early 2000s before Heritage's board voted to end its direct involvement; the formal separation was completed in March 2005, leaving Townhall.com as a standalone for-profit company. In May 2006, Salem Communications — a Christian and conservative broadcasting company — acquired Townhall.com and relaunched it with podcasts and blogs tied to Salem's radio network. Salem later rebranded as Salem Media Group and consolidated its digital holdings under Townhall Media, a subsidiary that also includes RedState, PJ Media, HotAir, Twitchy, and Bearing Arms; the combined network generates over 35 million monthly sessions. Open Secrets data shows Salem Media Group directs essentially all of its political donations to Republican candidates and right-leaning PACs. Regular contributors have included Ben Shapiro, Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, and Dennis Prager, and guest writers have included members of the Trump family. Media bias organizations including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides consistently rate Townhall as strongly right-leaning, and it has drawn repeated criticism for one-sided framing and failed fact checks. In January 2026, Townhall Media appointed conservative radio host Larry O'Connor as editor of Townhall.com.
