Background

TRT (Turkish Radio and Television Corporation) was founded in 1964 as Turkey's national public broadcaster. TRT World launched in May–June 2015 as its English-language international channel, explicitly framed by President Erdoğan as a counter to Western media dominance and what he called biased Western coverage of Turkey. From the outset, critics and researchers noted that TRT World functioned less as an independent public-service outlet and more as a soft-power vehicle for the AKP government. In 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice ordered TRT to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), rejecting the network's claim of editorial independence and concluding that TRT acts on behalf of the Turkish government. A 2022 academic study published in a peer-reviewed journalism journal described TRT World as a 'party broadcaster' that amplified the ruling party's narratives while sidelining opposition voices. In 2025, Nordic Monitor reported that TRT may have made false statements in its FARA periodic disclosure, claiming it had not engaged in political activity on behalf of a foreign principal — a claim legal analysts said was questionable.
