TVP World

Polish state-funded public broadcaster (English-language, pro-Poland/pro-NATO viewpoint)

Owned byOwned by Telewizja Polska (TVP), a state-owned joint-stock company controlled by Poland's State Treasury. Since November 2024 its international channels have been run through TVP's Overseas Media Centre, headed by Michał Broniatowski.

FundingMainly Polish government money. Poland's Foreign Ministry has provided grants for TVP World (reported figures include about PLN 74.5 million, and more recently about PLN 84.4 million). TVP overall also draws on public funding and advertising.

Background

TVP World launched on 18 November 2021 and replaced the online channel Poland IN, which began in 2018. It was created under the Law and Justice (PiS) government, when TVP news was widely criticized as partisan. In December 2023 the new government of Donald Tusk took control of public media. TVP World was taken off air on 20 December 2023 and its director was fired. It relaunched on 11 March 2024 under new management. Its stated goal is to deliver news from a Polish perspective and promote Poland's soft power abroad, so it tends to stress Polish government priorities such as support for Ukraine, NATO and European security. Critics of the earlier PiS-era output saw it as pro-government, and the post-2023 changes were themselves disputed on legal grounds. TVP's government-dependent funding remains a long-running concern for editorial independence. On Trump's second term, it carried extensive live coverage of the January 2025 inauguration with expert commentary on U.S.-Poland ties. I did not find a systematic review of its recent coverage, so the 'mostly neutral' label is a cautious judgment.
