Background

The Department of the Interior was established by Congress on March 3, 1849, making it the oldest domestic cabinet department. It was created to manage the nation's rapidly expanding public lands and relations with Native American tribes. Over the following century its mandate grew to include national parks (National Park Service was established in 1916), wildlife refuges (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), offshore energy leasing (Bureau of Ocean Energy Management), water infrastructure (Bureau of Reclamation), and scientific research (U.S. Geological Survey).
