Background

Ukrainska Pravda was founded in April 2000 by Georgiy Gongadze and Olena Prytula. Its early funding came from a sponsor close to security official Yevhen Marchuk, and that arrangement ended after the site published a critical article about him. Gongadze was kidnapped and murdered in September 2000. The killing became a defining scandal for President Leonid Kuchma's government, and Prytula then led the outlet as editor-in-chief. It became known for investigations of corruption and of officials in both government and opposition. Sevgil Musaieva replaced Prytula as editor-in-chief in 2014. In 2021 Prytula transferred control of the outlet to Dragon Capital, and CEO Tomas Fiala has been named as its owner. Staff grew from about 70 to about 200 afterward. Critics sometimes question how independent a site can be from an investor-owned parent, though the outlet has kept its investigative record. European Pravda, its sister site, covers EU and NATO integration and foreign policy. Similarweb data shows Ukrainska Pravda as Ukraine's most popular news site. Its perspective is pro-Ukrainian sovereignty, pro-Western and critical of Russia, and it is also critical of Ukrainian officials when it finds wrongdoing. Its English edition republishes wire and other outlets' reporting on Trump policy toward Ukraine. In recent weeks it has covered the Trump administration's push for Zelensky to meet Putin, reported US envoys' threat to cut intelligence sharing over Ukrainian refinery strikes, and Trump's call for a new Ukrainian president. It has also reported the roughly $400 million in military aid the administration is committing to spend. That mix of aid and pressure leads to a mixed rather than uniformly hostile or friendly stance.
