Background

Ukrainska Pravda was founded in April 2000 by journalists Georgiy Gongadze and Olena Prytula as an independent online outlet intended to bypass growing government control over Ukraine's mainstream media. That same year, Gongadze was kidnapped and murdered near Kyiv in a case that became a national scandal, with evidence on audio tapes implicating then-President Leonid Kuchma; the affair drew international attention to press freedom in Ukraine and dramatically raised the outlet's profile. Prytula took over leadership and continued publishing under sustained pressure. In its early years, the site relied heavily on grants from international democracy-support organizations. Over two decades it grew into one of Ukraine's most widely read news platforms, earning a reputation for investigative reporting on corruption and oligarchic influence across multiple presidential administrations. In May 2021, Prytula sold 100% of the outlet to Tomas Fiala, CEO of the investment firm Dragon Capital, who pledged to preserve its editorial independence; the newsroom grew from roughly 70 to 200 staff under new ownership. In January 2026, Fiala sold a minority stake to Pluralis B.V., backed by major European media groups and democracy foundations, in the first institutional investment in independent Ukrainian media since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. In October 2024, the outlet publicly reported systematic pressure from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office — including denial of press accreditation, blocked official sources, and pressure on advertisers — citing the outlet's critical coverage of wartime corruption and mobilization failures; the Committee to Protect Journalists called on Kyiv to halt the interference, while the presidential office denied the allegations.
