Background

UnHerd launched in 2017 with funding from Paul Marshall, and former Times comment editor Tim Montgomerie was its first editor. It billed itself as a home for views outside the mainstream and for challenging groupthink. Freddie Sayers, who had been its video and interview lead, became editor-in-chief and later CEO. It began charging for subscriptions in the early 2020s while keeping Marshall's backing.
