Background

The U.S. Naval Institute was founded on October 9, 1873, in Annapolis by a group of 15 naval officers who wanted a forum for professional discussion about the post-Civil War Navy. Its flagship magazine, Proceedings, has run since 1874, and Naval History was added in 1987. USNI News is the Institute's online news service. I could not confirm its launch date or current editor from the sources I consulted. It is known for its Fleet and Marine Tracker, which lists where U.S. ships are deployed, and for reports on shipbuilding, budgets, and operations. The Institute says it is editorially independent and advocates no political or business interest. As a membership organization with a largely naval readership and defense-industry advertisers, it tends to share the Navy community's priorities, such as fleet size and readiness. Its 2026 coverage of Defense Secretary Hegseth has included his acquisition-reform speeches and his Shangri-La Dialogue remarks. It has also reported on the USS Abraham Lincoln's nearly 11-month deployment, whose extensions Hegseth signed. Its approach is generally descriptive rather than editorial.
