Background

Venezuelanalysis launched in September 2003, founded by sociologist Gregory Wilpert with Martín Sánchez, a co-founder of the pro-Chávez site Aporrea; the Venezuelan government assisted with its initial setup. Wilpert edited the site until 2009 and remains on its board; Ricardo Vaz is now the lead editor. The site describes itself as independent and dedicated to giving voice to leftist and grassroots movements in Venezuela, explicitly aiming to counter what it sees as corporate media propaganda against the Bolivarian Revolution. Early funding reportedly included some support from Venezuela's Ministry of Culture, but by 2014 the outlet said it relied entirely on reader donations and took no government money. Following the January 2026 U.S. capture of Maduro and the installation of an interim, U.S.-aligned government under Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuelanalysis has published extensive opinion and analysis pieces condemning the intervention as imperialist and a 'kidnapping' of Venezuelan sovereignty.
